England to end a poor campaign with a win
Two teams with nothing to play for meet each other in the final round of group fixtures having lost both their opening encounters. In England’s case they have gone down in quite spectacular fashion. This match will not have the competitive intensity of those that went before without a chance of progressing out of the group however England manager, Aidy Boothroyd, will need to get a result amidst heavy criticism for not being able to get his talented squad a point on the board in Group C.
Dramatic defeats
The English will be looking to clear their minds following their late losses against France and Romania. A 95th minute own goal from Crystal Palace right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka who was subsequently dropped, saw them lose 2-1 to the French in the opener, in a game where they led until the 89th minute. In the second match Tammy Abraham equalised in the 87th minute only for them to end up losing 4-2 in a manic six goal second period. Boothroyd rang the changes after the France game and I would expect him do so again for Monday’s clash with nothing riding on it, to give his squad a run out. Certain players could have one eye on pre-season with their clubs whereas some will not be involved in the first team with their current employers so will not be affected.
Past encounters
The two previous matches between the sides were in the 2014 Euro qualification playoffs in which England won 4-2 on aggregate winning both legs 2-1. Though of course not many of the players in those squads are legible to be involved in this match. On paper England have the upper hand with an impressive group of players looking to express themselves on a big stage and gain some tournament experience that could be key moving forward into the senior team.
Ones to Watch
Phil Foden scored an excellent solo goal against France yet somehow did not start the Romania fixture, as a player who has struggled for first team football this season just gone, I would expect him to come back into the fold. Abraham has not started a match in the tournament, having to deputise first to Dominic Solanke and then Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the Romania game, he should get a run out in this one though coming off the back of a full on season with Aston Villa, getting promotion via the playoffs.
England to get three points on the board in a tight game where their flair comes through against an out of form Croatia.
