Crew to push reigning champs in entertainer
We began in March, expected to finish in October, but finally after a busy schedule, the MLS Cup final is upon us this Sunday at 1am UK time. Columbus Crew will host the 2019 champions Seattle Sounders, it is the Crew’s second time at this stage, losing out to the Portland Timbers in 2015. Crew come in as narrow favourites but that is mainly down to the match’s location, Seattle have been here and done it before, in high pressure situations that counts for a lot. Both sides have been enterprising in making it this far and I would expect no different coming into the biggest game of the year.
Goals?
Goals has to be an angle for me but overs is too short on the market to take in isolation. There have been three or more goals in eight of Columbus’ last 12 and seven of Seattle’s last 12, with the over 2.5 popping in both of these franchises most recent MLS Cup final appearances. The Crew has scored in 11 of 12, conceded in 10 of 12 with both teams getting on the scoresheet in nine of 12. The Sounders have scored in 11 of 12, conceded in nine of 12 and both teams have found the net in nine of 12. Neither screams defensive solidity.
Key man
It is a star studded encounter, with Gyasi Zardes leading the way for Columbus, but for me it is all about Nicolas Lodeiro. The Uruguayan has had a great career as an attacking midfielder and achieving back to back MLS Cup triumphs at 31 would be a great way to keep the success coming. He has contributed six goals and nine assists this season and tandem with competition top scorer Raul Ruidiaz and third in the scoring charts Jordan Morris they could be lethal. The visitors were a shade more impressive in the group stage, finishing second in the Western Conference where the Crew were third in the east. They seem a more well rounded outfit.
The Sounders have fewer minutes on the pitch having got through their playoff matches in 90 minutes, with Columbus needing extra time to get past Nashville in the last eight. Two consecutive clean sheets for the hosts will give them confidence but I feel the occasion could get to them and the Sounders’ reliable stalwarts will come to the fore.
This will not be an anti climax, an entertaining one on the cards that could go all the way.
