Celtic to clash with Hungarian giants in Europe
Celtic’s Champions League adventure is already underway and they face a tougher test this time out when they take on Hungarian hot-shots Ferencvárosi TC. Will it be another walk in the park for Neil Lennon’s side? Have a read of our preview here:
Union showing promise early on
The Champions League and European competition in general, has seen slender pickings for Scottish clubs in recent years. The gulf between the domestic game north of the border and that of other nations on the continent has been shown in stark contrast.
The fact that Celtic are likely to bag their tenth straight title might bring joy their supporters, but it does put the lack of competition within their own country in pain view.
In reality, it has been this way for years and even with Rangers back in the top flight the green half of Glasgow should be expecting their side to dominate the landscape for at least another half-decade before Steven Gerrard’s side are able to truly build a side with enough quality to push the Bhoys.
Europe, however, has always been more challenging. This season is likely to be no different. The ease with which they dominate the Scottish Premiership is a far cry from taking on the technically proficient and, often, far better sides on the continent.
The opening rounds tend to be used as a warm-up, but as Neil Lennon’s side progress, they must avoid losing to the first decent side they come up against, an all too familiar tale to Celtic fans.
Odsonne Edouard is the key to their success this season. His goals will be the difference as will the talents of captain Scott Brown and Southampton loanee Mohamed Elyounoussi.
With the enforced pause due to COVID breaches, behind them, Celtic must now regain focus and dominate both at home and abroad.
Hungry for success
Ferencvaros dominate their domestic league much like Celtic and last season was another walk in the park for the Hungarian champions.
A 13 point gap between them and second place Fehervar just highlights the gulf between themselves and the rest of the clubs back home.
They will offer a sterner test for Neil Lennon’s outfit but the odds remain firmly stacked against them.
Their star players are Ivory Coast attacker Frank Boli, who netted 10 times last season to finish as the club’s top scorer and Ukrainian midfielder Oleksandr Zubkov. Both will need to be at their clinical best if Fradi are to stand a chance on Wednesday night.
