Brentford to leap frog Leeds
Brentford can overtake Leeds on Tuesday if they manage to pick up three points against Marcelo Bielsa’s wobbling whites. Will Leeds bottle it yet again? Have a read of our preview here:
Has anybody seen the wheels?
The phrase ‘the wheels have come off’ has never been more apt than it is right now in relation to Leeds United. What on earth has happened to Marcelo Bielsa’s once imperious team?
The defeat at the weekend to Nottingham Forest was their fourth in five games, as many as they’d suffered in their previous 26 in the Championship.
The problem, however, runs deeper than that because Leeds have only managed two wins in their last 10 games. A dangerous run of form that has seen Fulham eat away at an 11 point cushion to draw level with them and only fail to overtake them due to an inferior goal difference.
The ‘Bielsa fade’ appears to be happening again as Leeds could have run out of steam at the crucial time.
Defensively they suddenly look vulnerable as they have failed to keep a clean sheet in 10 league games. In the 10 matches before that, they kept seven clean sheets and conceded just three times.
They’ve also conceded first in every match they have played in 2020 in what’s been an alarming decline in such a short space of time. The saving grace was the points cushion they’d built up which, amazingly, means they are still second in the table but a defeat on Tuesday will definitely see them fall out of the top two.
The Bees are buzzing
Brentford are on a run quite unlike that of Leeds. They lost just once in their last six, winning four in which they have scored at least three goals.
This form moves them within two points of Marcelo Bielsa’s side and could see them replace them in the automatic promotion places if they win on Tuesday.
Just because Leeds are on a bad run does not mean it will be easy, with the visitors likely to have more of the ball but Brentford are playing with confidence which will make a big difference.
Ollie Watkins is in superb form, scoring 20 times in 32 appearances for the Bees this season including in each of the last two. This could finally be the season they win promotion to the Premier League which, considering their history, would be an amazing achievement.
