Ecuador to do themselves justice in Brazil

Table toppers Brazil host Ecuador in matchday five of the South American World Cup Qualification group, the visitors have been one of the surprise packages so far climbing to third by winning three of the four matches so far. The hosts are favourites when it comes to any South American competition at the moment, they are Copa America reigning champions and have a squad who have gelled over the last few years, becoming a well oiled machine that never makes any fuss about qualifying. When in reality it is a horrible format with banana skins lying in every fixture. Ecuador will enjoy the underdogs tag.

Recent form

Gustavo Alfaro’s men hammered Colombia in their last outing, but that was back in mid November so any momentum built by that performance will have evaporated by the time they lineup in Brazil. Their other two victories came over relative minnows Bolivia and Uruguay. They have been excellent viewing of late with goals flying in at both ends, however the nature of this fixture coming at the end of a season with players having miles in their legs, an unders play is far more appetising. Ecuador have made three World Cups in their history, all coming this decade, making three of four between 2002 and 2014, missing out in 2010 and 2018, so they are due a strong qualifying campaign to justify their footballing progression as a nation.

Brazil will be strong favourites when they do battle with Ecuador for the foreseeable future, unsurprisingly they are short in this one, providing little value. Getting Ecuador onside in some way possibly using the Asian Handicap would allow for better value than in finding a Brazil based selection.

Goals?

An unders play excites me here, with Brazil a functional side who would be content with a marginal victory or draw against a team just two spots behind them.

  • Brazil have scored in eight of ten.
  • Brazil have conceded in six of ten.
  • Brazil have seen both teams score in four of ten.
  • Brazil have seen over 2.5 goals in four of ten.
  • Ecuador have scored in eight of ten.
  • Ecuador have conceded in seven of ten.
  • Ecuador have seen both teams score in five of ten.
  • Ecuador have seen over 2.5 goals in seven of ten.

The visitors will leave everything out there, it is a bigger opportunity for them than the hosts who will have no issues in sealing qualification.
