Can Dortmund avoid a slip-up against Hertha?
Is the Bundesliga title race over? Borussia Dortmund will be hoping not as they prepare for another important game at the weekend. Hertha Berlin, in improved form, are the visitors. Have a read of our preview here:
It ain’t over until it’s over…yeah right
With many European league becoming ever more predictable, the hopes of football neutrals everywhere were with Borussia Dortmund when they took on Bayern Munich in mid-week.
Oh how we never learn. Dortmund were defeated by a single goal scored by Joshua Kimmich and now have to hope their Bavarians slip up at least three times before the end of the season while remaining flawless themselves…hardly likely.
Mats Hummels, as reported by the BBC, said after the defeat: "I think now it is only up to Bayern to decide the title.
"We're seven points behind and can do nothing more than win our games. But we have to hope they slip up three times. We know how good they are."
The reality of the situation is clearly not lost on the defender, but it does mean Dortmund can now go all out to make sure they secure important victories in their remaining games.
At the time of writing, they are shortly to face bottom side Paderborn and you’d expect them to fly through that one but Hertha will prove a tougher opponent.
Prior to the defeat against Bayern, Dortmund had won six straight games, conceding just once in those games while banging home 15 goals of their own.
Getting back to that form is key and very likely so expect them to be back to their free-scoring selves in this one.
Hertha’s form encouraging sign
Three wins in their last four games, including a convincing derby win against Union, has lifted spirts within the Hertha camp.
It is a sign of their better form overall where they have not lost just twice since the start of February, a run on nine matches.
The recent victories have been built on solid defensive displays with three clean-sheets in the last four with an impressive 2-2 away to RB Leipzig also wedge in there.
Dedryck Boyata is a key figure in the backline while Niklas Stark has also made an important contribution.
Hertha will be a tough opponent, but Dortmund’s need is greater so that could just give them the edge here.
