Sevilla to surprise the world no. 1s in Super Cup?
The UEFA Super Cup takes place this Thursday evening, taking centre stage as Bayern Munich take on Sevilla. The Europa League champions and natural outsiders for this encounter have strengthened their ranks no end in the brief transfer window, giving them my wildcard selection to compete for the La Liga title. The German champions are heavy favourites having won 31 of their last 32 games, battering Schalke 8-0 in their Bundesliga opener. Julen Lopetegui is a manager for the big stage and will be putting together a masterplan of how to defeat Bayern, will his side be able to contain them for a full match though remains to be seen.
Transfer business
To start with the underdogs and this window saw the romantic return of Ivan Rakitic to Seville. The Croatian turned out just under 150 times for Sevilla before moving to Camp Nou in 2014 and will be welcomed home as the midfield conductor as the fourth placed finishers look to turn their Europa League pedigree into Champions League fortunes, the 32-year-old’s experience could be key. They have also added Argentina international Marcos Acuna from Sporting Lisbon, goalkeeper Bono from Girona, who starred in the latter stages of the Europa League whilst on loan from Girona and arguably the most exciting of them all in Oscar Rodriguez.
Oscar was nothing short of superb for relegated Leganes last term, a player the fans will be grateful to have seen pull their club’s jersey. With some that will make the highlight reels for years to come Oscar scored 13 and assisted six in two seasons with Leganes. Bagging nine last term dragging Leganes close to survival at the disadvantage of losing Martin Braithwaite and Youssef En Nesyri in January. He now reunites with the latter, watch this space.
These signatures have come in through the door that Ever Banega and Sergio Reguilon exited from, two key players in last season’s success move on to pastures new with Al Shabab and Tottenham Hotspur respectively.
As for Bayern, they have waved goodbye to ball playing midfielder Thiago Alcantara to Premier League champions Liverpool, and seen Philippe Coutinho, Ivan Perisic and Alvaro Odriozola return to their parent clubs. Leroy Sane, Tanguy Kouassi and Alexander Nubel have come in, with only Sane expected to play regular first team football. The German international joins having boosted his reputation with Manchester City but off the back of a terrible knee injury, it will take time for him to return to his best form.
Bayern are just too good to back against, comfortably the best in the world, but it is a free hit for Sevilla, they could cause an upset.
