Atleti with visions of a win at the Wanda
Villarreal firing blanks
Diego Simeone’s side look to maintain their perfect start to this La Liga campaign but face arguably their trickiest test of the season so far against last season’s Europa League champions. Villarreal’s two opening games in La Liga have ended goalless, with 0-0 draws against Granada on the opening game week and then the same result against newly promoted Espanyol. Atleti put in some typically workmanlike performances in their opening two wins, but they’ll have to show their attacking flair against this defensively solid Unai Emery team.
Super sub Suarez
Five of the last six matchups against Atleti and Villarreal have finished with less than 2.5 goals. Couple this with the defensive class of both teams and I can’t see many goals in this matchup. It will be a fascinating tactical battle between two of La Liga’s most talented sides. With Villarreal not getting a win yet this season, and Simeone’s men looking so assured with wins against Elche and Celta Vigo, I can see Atletico Madrid winning this one with a low scoring result and keeping a clean sheet. If you wanted to bet on the specifics, a 1-0 Atleti win at 6.00 wouldn’t be a bad shout, however I’d keep my options open for Atleti to grab a second. With attacking talents such as Correa, Carrasco with Suarez currently coming off the bench, it’s certainly possible that they’ll break down a very steadfast Villarreal backline.
Atleti to make a statement
Atletico Madrid will be looking to assert their title winning form. With their capital rivals Real Madrid poised to make the big money singing of Kylian Mbappe, sending out a statement to the current champions, Atleti will need to claim all three points in games like this to keep their consistent edge. Atletico’s imperious home form at the Wanda Metropolitano, that’s seen them lose just one of their last 20 home games since the start of the year.
This game looks destined to be a tactical battle, but I can see Atletico Madrid continuing their perfect start here. That’s why I’m going with under 2.5 goals and an Atletico Madrid win with bet365.

Bad loss here. Despite it being 0-0 at half-time and Atleti dominating the half, Villarreal lead twice in this game, only for a bizarre own goal in the final seconds salvaging a point for Atleti. Final score, 2-2
