England will travel to Albania for their second FIFA World Cup qualifying match on Sunday. The Three Lions coasted to victory over minnows San Marino 5-0, and in truth, the margin ought to have been far wider, but the number of points gained was the same on a night Hungary and Poland conspired to draw with each other, which has already put the group favourites in pole position. Meanwhile, the hosts eked out a narrow win over Andorra, but the prospect of keeping Gareth Southgate's side full of attack and youthful exuberance at bay for the majority of the match is entirely different. Read our preview here:
The midfield laid Bare
Possibly the most pleasing aspect of the win by Kuq e Zinjtë was really restricting Andorra to hopeful punts on the occasions the principality were able to wrest possession away from the visitors. The chief reason for that was the work done by the central midfield trio in red and black, especially by Espanyol's Keidi Bare. The best defence he and his teammates will have against England will be acting as a buttress to the back three being exposed by keeping the ball for as long as possible. Ordinarily, much of their own approach play would go through the wing-backs (particularly Napoli's Elseid Hysaj, who is well-versed in dealing with top-level opposition), but they will have to adapt to a more defensive posture down the flanks.
Rice, Rice, baby
Several of Southgate's key players were taken off against San Marino at half-time with Sunday's game in mind. The head coach will be cognisant that the battle is likely to be much keener, even if it's unlikely the Balkan nation will offer much threat in attacking areas. Luke Shaw and Reece James will have the freedom of their wings to get up and down to create overloads on one particular flank, whilst England can afford to not pay too much heed to the need to include a defensive midfielder ahead of their defensive high line. Though Declan Rice can and does operate in that way for West Ham United, the onus is much more likely on him to come forward with the ball at his feet and dictate from central areas. This should in turn reassure his compatriots that they have the licence to entrench themselves deep in Albania's own third.
Another Sterling operation
Whilst England cannot take the game for granted, they are heavy favourites to make it a second win on the spin ahead of their crunch clash with Poland at Wembley. The overall draw has been kind once again to Southgate's charges, and he has at his disposal a bevy of young talent, especially in attack-minded areas on the wings and midfield, chomping at the bit to show what they can do on the international stage. The defence is less watertight, even a little complacent at times, but are probably not going to receive a thorough examination on Sunday. bet365 have the visitors to win to nil at odds of 1.91.
