Goals on the cards in Super Cup derby
AC Milan take on Inter Milan in the Supercoppa Italiana on Wednesday evening.
Milan finally regained the Scudetto last season under Stefano Pioli while Simone Inzaghi maintained some faith amongst the Inter supporter base by delivering the Coppa Italia.
The last few years have seen the Milan clubs seize power back in Serie A, a big part of that has been their spending in the transfer market along with Juventus falling below the standards that they had set previously.
Milan have the trickier match at the weekend, travelling to Lazio when Inter host Empoli, and they are just one point ahead of Inter in the table, in what is a very close group behind Napoli streaking away at the summit.
Background
Milan will be without Alessandro Florenzi, Ante Rebic, Fode Ballo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic while Rade Krunic and Mike Maignan are doubtful.
Marcelo Brozovic, Romelu Lukaku and Samir Handanovic are unavailable for Inter, but the Black and Blues still go in as favourites, with Milan not looking the same side just yet after the World Cup break.
Inter are looking to retain the crown after beating Juventus 2-1 AET last year, where Milan have not lifted the cup since 2016 when they got the better of Juve on penalties.
In looking for an outright play, this is set to be a tightly fought encounter, and Inter are justifiably narrow favourites.
The fixture had been decided in 90 minutes four years in a row, before last year, so goals can be expected again, despite what is on the line.
This will be far more serious than the Community Shield is in England, but with a truncated league schedule surrounding it, there may be an element of squad rotation.
Goals?
I am pro-goals heading into this one, mainly due to the way that Milan are playing at the moment, they do not look like keeping a clean sheet anytime soon.
