Aberdeen to make light work of Runavik
Aberdeen will fly the Scottish flag in Europe when they host NCI Runavik on Thursday evening. The Farore Islanders are unlikely to offer much of a challenge but shocks do happen. Have a read of our preview here:
Aberdeen hoping to go deep in Europe
Sometimes you need a bit of Europa League action to distract you from troubles at home. This can certainly be said of Aberdeen.
The club have brought the game into disrepute thanks to the stupidity of a small number of their players. Breaking COVID rules and contracting the virus has seen several of their games postponed and bring condemnation from the nation’s leaders.
In their first two games, they lost to Rangers 1-0 before winning against St Johnstone by the same scoreline.
Derek McInnes side should be looking at this game as a gimme given the quality of the opposition but they need to be more clinical than they have been in both domestic matches so far.
Scoring appears to be a real problem for the club. Sam Cosgrove is an important player as could be Leeds United loanee, Ryan Edmondson.
They need more from their creative players. Funso Ojo has a lot of quality but sometimes struggles to show it on a consistent basis and new addition Jonny Hayes has plenty of experience to bring to the table.
This is a good opportunity for The Dons to build some confidence. They now need to do their talking on the pitch.
Keep it tight
NSI Runavik will know this is going to be a tough evening for them but if they can keep their shape and discipline then they may well be able to frustrate Aberdeen.
The club only won their domestic division for the first time in 2007 and have come a long way since then. They are team made up entirely of local players from the Faroe Islands and will see this as an important fixture.
A chance to pit themselves against a former European champion and elite team from Scotland.
