Chelsea - Tottenham Match Preview
Chelsea are no strangers to cup success, winning the FA Cup last season. They saw off Spurs in the FA Cup as recently as April 2017. Though Spurs have gotten the better of their West London rivals as of late, winning the last 4 out of 6 ties.
Both teams are experiencing a period of mixed form. They've both recently slipped in the league and are chasing top four spots, with in-form Arsenal and Manchester United hot on their heels. It’ll be interesting to see how their manager's prioritise this cup tie.
The Carabao Cup represents a solid chance for both clubs to come home with silverware this season
Spurs go into this semi final 2nd leg of the Carabao Cup with a one nil lead over the Blues.
Tottenham's squad go into the tie the most strained of the two. Mauricio Pochettino has some notable injuries and absences seriously affecting his ability to field his strongest possible side. The most series deficiencies are up front with forward men Harry Kane and Lucas Moura missing due to injury. Chelsea have a full side to choose from with the exception of Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who likely wouldn't have started anyway.
Neither manager fielded weakened sides on the weekend and no attempt was made to rest players ahead of this fixture, although perhaps the Spurs boss doesn’t feel he has that luxury at the moment.
Spurs were absent for most of their recent match up against struggling Fulham but picked it up slightly in the second half. Their tenacity paid off in the end with midfielder Harry Winks stealing an injury time winner at the last gasp.
Chelsea on the other hand looked lost during their 2-0 defeat against Arsenal on Saturday evening. Manager Maurizio Sarri’s honeymoon period that saw them top the league table early on in the season is well and truly over. Sarri, perhaps unwisely, chose to dig his players out after the game, a feat that has landed his predecessors in serious trouble not so far into the distant past. Sarri said his players were difficult to motivate. It'll be interesting to see how they respond to such harsh criticism of their character.
The Carabao Cup represents a solid chance for both clubs to come home with silverware this season, although how much they're willing to prioritise this game ahead of league form remains to be seen. The line ups will be the tell all factor.
