Bale to boost Wales' promotion procession
Temporarily managerless Wales host Republic of Ireland on Sunday, with a win taking them a game away from sealing promotion to League A of the UEFA Nations League. The Irish are well off the pace in Group 4 having picked up just two points from four matches, stalemates with bottom nation Bulgaria and the reverse fixture against Wales. Republic of Ireland like many teams before them are suffering a little bit of post-Mick McCarthy blues and in that are comfortably outsiders for this. The Welsh will be buoyed by the return of Gareth Bale, though not at full throttle, the Tottenham Hotpsur is sure to lift the level of those around him.
Goal line
This game has unders written all over it, just as the last meeting did, however there is no value. Under 1.5 is a fair punt at 2.45 best price with 888sport given the stubbornness of the Republic of Ireland backline, Wales will have to be creative if they are to break them down. To avoid disappointment and jump on the toothless attack at Stephen Kenny’s disposal, both teams to score no is a safer option. Combined with another match play to enhance is my view on this fixture.
Motivation
Wales have everything to play for in their push to play with Europe’s elite, whereas Ireland have their final match against Bulgaria to fall back on, I fully expect them to avoid relegation. Ryan Giggs’ absence could be a hindrance but also a blessing, if Rob Page can instill a two game new manager bounce then it may fuel the attacking fire that has been lacking in the national team for months. Wales need to build momentum heading into next summer’s Euros and will look to raise their level from now on in preparation for that. Sometimes the Nations League is not treated as a competitive match however there is plenty for them to work towards in this all British affair.
The star quality in this game comes from the Welsh side, the last time they hosted the Republic of Ireland they ran out simple 4-1 winners, such dominance is unlikely but they should impose themselves much more on this game than the last head-to-head.
