Tranmere's poor home record to continue
High flying Wycombe Wanderers travel to Prenton Park to play Tranmere Rovers for the second time in a week three days preceding their FA Cup replay following their 2-2 draw at the same venue on Saturday. Much sort after gaffer Gareth Ainsworth’s side are sitting second in the League One table, a cool five points ahead of Peterborough United in third with a game in hand. For a club with no youth setup, and a tight wage and transfer budget this is an incredible achievement with Wanderers fighting hard against relegation deep into their 2018/19 campaign.
Visitors’ unbeaten run
Nine games unbeaten are the Chairboys, dating back to mid-September and they have claimed excellent scalps over the likes of Sunderland, Rotherham United and Portsmouth along the way. It is no wonder the interest continues to swoop around their manager whenever there is a vacancy in League One and the Championship in most cases.
They played out a brilliantly entertaining 3-3 drawing with Posh also in this run, with talisman 37-year-old striker Adebayo Akinfenwa scoring two, including a 95th minute pressure penalty. He is the Chairboys’ joint top scorer with five league goals this campaign, sharing that crown with set piece specialist Joe Jacobson.
Joe Jacobson
The set piece specialist has contributed five goals from left-back so far this season, including an unbelievable hattrick in a 3-1 win against Lincoln City at Adams Park in September. He opened the scoring by curling a majestic free kick out of the reach of Josh Vickers diving to his left between the sticks. What followed that screamer had to seen to be believed, he squeezed in two bending shots direct from corners! Both inswingers, one flew in at the near post and then a more lofted effort dipped in at the far post to complete the treble. The 32-year-old Welshman managed seven strikes last season his best tally in a Wycombe shirt, now entering his sixth season with the club, the fan favourite will be desperate to continue their improbable promotion push.
Rushian Hepburn-Murphy
Rovers have a recent hattrick hero of their own in the form of Aston Villa loanee Rushian Hepburn-Murphy. The 21-year-old scored thrice in their last league outing, a 3-1 win at Stadium MK, condemning Paul Tisdale to the sack as a result, and pulling Micky Mellon’s side away from the bottom three. Hepburn-Murphy averages a goal every 137 minutes in League One and will be a threat to contend with at Prenton Park on Sunday.
Tranmere have not won in the league at home since September and this weekend will not be any different.
