Can Young Boys clinch the title in Sion?
League leaders Young Boys travel to Sion where a win would clinch the title for a third consecutive season. Gerardo Seoane’s men had not won the Swiss Super League until the 2017-18 season, Basel had won 11 out of 14 league titles including eight on the trot, but they now have a competitor as Young Boys close in on this triumph and a place in Champions League qualification. Sion have shown some good form of their own in recent weeks, an unbeaten run of five games has propelled them off the foot of the table and very much still in the race for survival, three points from safety.
Last time out
Young Boys recorded their third consecutive win accompanied by a clean sheet in a row in beating Luzern by a goal to nil. The scoreline flattered Luzern however with Young Boys winning the shot count 21-3 with usual suspect Jean Pierre Nsame taking the decisive strike on 72 minutes. This came after two impressive victories on the road, 5-0 against Zurich and another 1-0 scalp away to Xamax. Helping Seoane’s side stretch their gap to five points ahead of St. Gallen in second place. Nsame is the top scorer in the division by a jaw dropping 14 goals, bagging 30 in as many games.
Sion are on their best run of the season and will thrive on the underdogs tag with the chance to delay and maybe even deny Young Boys a third successive title. It was a tale of frustration last time out as Friday’s visitors passed up a golden opportunity to close the gap between them and safety in hosting eighth placed Thun. A win would have seen them poke their heads into safety, but they conceded a late equaliser in an evenly matched affair. Senegalese midfielder Birama Ndoye broke the deadlock with 10 minutes of normal time remaining before Nikki Havenaar saved Thun’s blushes and ensured the gap between the two sides stayed at three points.
Jean Pierre Nsame
The Cameroonian striker needs one goal from the last two to break Seydou Doumbia’s record for the most goals in a Swiss Super League season. The 27-year-old has slammed home seven goals in his last five matches and will be hungry to get his hands on the title for those astounding efforts. He is the standout player in this game and will be very tricky for the Sion backline to handle.
The finish line in sight will increase Young Boys’ hunger. Sion are right up against it.
