All or nothing for Sociedad in Super Cup semi
Real Sociedad face Barcelona in Cordoba this Wednesday evening with the prospect of the Spanish Super Cup final looming large for Imanol Alguacil’s men. Ronald Koeman’s Barcelona have been under fire since the start of season, seeing a flurry of poor results follow their calamitous end to the 2019/20 campaign. The Whites and Blues are eligible for this competition due to making the still yet to be played Copa Del Rey final last term, they face Basque country rivals Athletic Bilbao in April, who matchup with Real Madrid in the other Super Cup semi. Given their recent improved form and the drop off we have seen from Sociedad, Barca come in as strong favourites.
With Atletico Madrid looking good in La Liga and Real Madrid likely their biggest rivals in competing for the title, the competition is a realistic chance for Barcelona to win their only silverware of the season. A feat that would give Koeman a little more time, with the Dutch boss firmly under pressure. He would have been delighted to see arguably his best two players combine to devastating extent when they thrashed Europa League outfit Granada 4-0 last time out, thanks to brace from both Antoine Griezmann and Lionel Messi.
The 29-year-old who joined the club for a whopping £120million has not been as prolific with the Catalan Giants compared to his former employers. Coming in for plenty of criticism as a result, the World Cup winner will be hoping to build on his performance against Granada to kick on in the Super Cup.
Sociedad have been struggling lately, they have failed to beat Osasuna, lost to Levante and Barca themselves in their last six, falling away from what looked like a surprise title push. Now their focus will be firmly back on qualifying for the Champions League, they are inferior to Barcelona in both boxes. Each team has posted outstanding underlying numbers with Barca top of the expected goals table and Sociedad close in second, it could be a great match for the neutral.
Definitely a possibility, it is a cup tie after all, there is nothing to lose for Sociedad in particular so both sides will be gunning for the victory.
- Sociedad have scored in eight of 10.
- Sociedad have conceded in eight of 10.
- Sociedad have seen both teams score in seven of 10.
- Sociedad have seen over 2.5 goals in four of 10.
- Barca have scored in nine of 10.
- Barca have conceded in six of 10.
- Barca have seen both teams score in five of 10.
- Barca have seen over 2.5 goals in seven of 10.
It will be an open, played out by two easy on the eye footballing sides, but Barca are the more reliable punt.
