High scoring Salzburg hit the ground hard
The Austrian Bundesliga returns and RB Salzburg face sit in second with a mouth-water trip to the team directly behind them on Wednesday. Can Rapid Vienna help LASK Linz take another step towards the title by denying their rivals some points? Have a read of our preview here:
Can RB Salzburg catch LASK Linz?
LASK will have been on RB Salzburg’s radar this season with the side from Linz finishing as runners-up last year, but the way they have stormed the league this time round will still have come as a shock.
They are six-points back as the season gets into its second phase and will be going all guns blazing to reclaim the crown they secured in 2018-19.
The standout players following the departure of Erling Haaland, a big loss for any side in this division, have been Hee-chan Hwang, eight goals and eight assists, and also Mergim Berisha.
Andrea Ulmer has been a superb player at left-back, completing 39 key passes to help his side net 74 goals in just 22 games this season.
In fact, Salzburg have scored at least 24 goals more than any other side in the division, averaging 3.36 goals per game.
This just goes to show how potent their attack has been which is likely to make this title run even more exciting.
Rapid Vienna still facing a big gap
This campaign has been pretty positive for Rapid Vienna but there is still no doubt they have a long way to go before they close the quality gap on RB Salzburg.
This season they also trail current leaders LASK who have had a sensational year, but there are plenty of reasons to be positive.
Taxiarchis Fortunas is one of them. The Greek striker has hit 14 goals this season while also laying on another and creating 11 chances for his teammate. The 24-year-old has been a real highlight as have the performances of Christoph Knasmullner who has 10 assists.
They are eight points behind Salzburg and that is a huge improvement on last season where they ended up 25 points back from the champions, finishing fifth.
It will be a good test of their talents, but the home side remain the favourites, and for good reason.
