Fishermen to find the net against Curle's Cobblers
Keith Curle’s Cobblers play host to an in form Fleetwood Town on Tuesday evening, in their bid to climb the table and away from the League One relegation battle to which they are many people’s favourites to slip into. Northampton have picked up four points from their last two, both on the road, after a poor run where they struggled particularly offensively. Curle adopts a very rigid direct style of play that could stifle Joey Barton’s men but the Fishermen will back themselves after demonstrating to the division in recent weeks, they are a force to be reckoned with. There is value aplenty in getting on side with the visitors at odds against.
Recent form
Barton’s side are certainly the more entertaining outfit, they have found the net in eight of their last nine matches pushing top end League One teams like Charlton Athletic and Sunderland very close alongside crushing Bristol Rovers and Plymouth Argyle to 4-1 and 5-1 thrashings. They have had their backline breached on a consistent basis, conceding in five of their last six, giving the Cobblers hope with both teams scoring in five of six as well.
Northampton are clear outsiders and have had problems this campaign in both defence and offense, they have conceded in 16 of 19 with two of the three clean sheets in that period coming in the EFL Trophy. They have found the net in only four of their last nine games, if it was not for Harry Smith’s good run, Town would be in the drop zone. A both teams to score punt would have been a winner in three of their last five League One encounters, they do possess the muscle to chip away at the Fishermen on Tuesday evening.
Process
Both sides have overperformed their expected goals numbers so far this term, the hosts are ranked 22nd in the division compared to 17th in the table for that metric. Barton’s men are two points off the playoffs in seventh but actually lie 14th for expected goals, some of their recent scorelines have been flattering.
The adept long range shooting of top scorer Callum Camps from attacking midfield will skew their expected goals data a touch. The summer signing from Rochdale can adopt a short on sight mentality and if allowed space and time will ensure Cobblers keeper Jonathan Mitchell is a very busy man on the night.
Fleetwood are looking very strong and are putting in performances reminiscent of their surge into the playoff places just last season, newly promoted Northampton will need to produce their best efforts to deny them.

Despite winning the expected goals battle and the shot count 14 to 5, it was the Cobblers who stood firm and grabbed a needed 1-0 victory.
