Lyon to breeze past weak Bordeaux
In the wake of being drawn in the kindest Champions League group of the lot Lyon should be buoyed to win comfortably at home to 10th-placed Bordeaux. Sylvinho’s side are amongst pot 1 minnows Zenit St. Petersburg, Red Bull Leipzig and Benfica which is generous considering the European giants they have avoided whilst sitting modestly in pot 3. They started the season in incredible strates smashing Monaco and Angers 3-0 and 6-0 before their optimism was silenced at the hands of Montpellier on Tuesday night as they went down 1-0.
Recent form
Lyon are unbeaten in 16 of their last 17 games that they have scored the opening goal in and are great to watch, with three or more goals taking place in their last eight Ligue 1 fixtures at the Lyon Olympic Stadium on the trot. Bordeaux had the worst goalscoring record away from home in 2018/19 equating to 0.53 goals per game. The hosts’ conversion rate has been extremely impressive on home soil of late, managing to score with six of their 11 shots, a statistic encouraging a contest would be that both sides have got on the scoresheet in all of the last six head-to-head meetings.
Lyon’s attacking duo
Moussa Dembele and Memphis Depay have both found the net three times so far in the league as Lyon got off to a flyer, thus removing the attention firmly from the loss of former star player Nabil Fekir. The former, ex-Fulham and Celtic striker should have more of chance to start this season following the summer departures, still only 23 the Frenchman has adjusted brilliantly to the challenge of Ligue 1 that is an underestimated step up from the Scottish Premier League, with 26 goals in 49 games. Better than a goal every other game! Depay has been pushed out wide to make room for Dembele alongside Burkina Faso international Bertrand Traore in a formidable front three.
The former PSV and Manchester United Dutchman has been less prolific with 42 goals from 119 games having settled in well amongst other budding young stars after a turbulent initial phase of his career in Holland and England. For Bordeaux this is the second strongest team on paper they will face this season and I think they will set up accordingly.
Lyon will beat Bordeaux easily and recover from their 10-man loss in midweek to carry on challenging at the top of the division.
