Jeonbuk to face a stern test of title credentials
Jeonbuk Motors won the K-League championship last season and have made an excellent start to the new campaign. Can they make it three out of three when they face Daegu on Sunday? Have a read of our preview here:
Title defence off to a good start
Jeonbuk won their seventh title when they finished with a +8 better goal difference than runners up Ulsan last season. It was an exciting campaign and they will have felt they deserved to finish in top spot.
The campaign was pretty smooth sailing with them winning three and drawing twice in the final round that saw them play each of the other top-six sides once.
The face Daegu away from home during that time and beat them 2-0 in a confident display to highlight the gulf between the two sides.
That gulf may not be so apparent this year but Jeonbuk have made the perfect start.
They opened the campaign with a 2-1 win over the Suwon Bluewings and then won a closely fought contest last weekend with newly-promoted Busan.
They took the lead through a well-rehearsed set-piece routine that saw Jeong-ho Hong place an unstoppable header into the corner.
A penalty saw the home side draw level before a stoppage-time winner form Lars Veldwijk sealed the win for the champions.
They play with swagger and are comfortable on the ball, but Daegu should be able to push them hard, as have both their opponents so far this season.
Daegu wanting progress
Last season was frustrating for Daegu as they finished just one point behind FC Seoul to miss out on AFC Champions League qualification.
There is a strong squad available to Lee Byung-Keun and they will have their eye on making it one step further this year.
They have a real threat in Brazilian forward Edgar Silva, who scored an excellent header last weekend to help them rescue a point against Pohang Steelers.
This weekend will test them against the best the K-League has to offer but they will be a tough opponent for last season’s title winners.
