Three Lions to roar passed the Danes on Wednesday
Gareth Southgate turned 50 last week and he’d love nothing more than to celebrate with two victories over Iceland and Denmark in the Nations League. The latter are faced on Wednesday evening and will be the tougher opponent. Can the Three Lions roar home with six points? Have a read of our preview here:
Cutting edge remains problematic for the Danes
Denmark have a squad containing some excellent players. A number would be considered world-class – Christian Eriksen comes to mind – but they lack in key areas which could halt their progress in the Nations League.
Defensively there appears to be a lot to like with English based pair Andreas Christensen (Chelsea) and Jannik Vestergaard (Southampton) making a solid centre-back partnership.
In midfielder Eriksen is their star. He is a real goal threat from midfield and from set-pieces while Ramus Falk is another creative threat yet the lack of a goal scorer in attack limits this team’s chances against better opposition.
Yussuf Poulsen or Martin Braithwaite are their most likely threat in attack but neither have scored double figure for their country.
They will give England a good game but could fall short in attacking areas.
Talking about my generation
The new generation is starting to filter through for England. There has been a marked progression even since the World Cup in Russia in 2018.
New faces have been included in Southgate’s latest squad with Conor Coady, Kavlin Phillips, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and, finally, Jack Grealish getting their opportunity to shine.
Grealish has deserved his chance for what seems like ages and could prove to be a key player for the Three Lions moving forward, as could Leeds hero Phillips.
Southgate is finally getting some new blood into a team that looked a bit stale at times and with mainstays Harry Kane, Jordan Pickford and Raheem Sterling there to help the new faces gel, this is an exciting time to be an England fan.
Denmark offer a good test for the Southgate’s men, a test they will hopefully pass with flying colours.
Denmark v England betting tip
The England squad face a tough test against the Danes, but there is still a huge gulf in talent between the two squads. With that in mind, we are backing England to win at odds of 1.83 with Betfair in this one.
