A top of the Bundesliga table clash is scheduled for late Saturday afternoon, pitting Bayern Munich against RB Leipzig in what is quickly becoming a fixture on the calendar to rival Der Klassiker in terms of interest and wider importance in the German domestic calendar. The hosts have a two-point lead over the visitors going into the tie. Hans-Dieter Flick's men have a big advantage in terms of scoring goals, but also in conceding them. This should give Julian Nagelsmann's Die Roten Bullen hope of some form of positive result at the Allianz Arena. Read our preview here:
Müller's second wind
Bayern had the luxury of resting key men for their Champions League away draw against Atletico Madrid. Raumdeuter Thomas Müller came off the bench to snatch a point from the penalty spot with their qualification to the knockout stages already secured. The 31 year-old will be back in the XI from the outset for the visit of Leipzig. Arguably, much of his side's best passages of play flow through him, and his ability to hold onto the ball is often overlooked in favour of his natural finishing and through balls to lone frontman Robert Lewandowski. Flanked by Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry, Flick has a peerless attacking quartet to call upon in the Bundesliga, and they have plundered 22 between them already in the competition. If there is a weakness in the current tactical setup, it's the deployment of the versatile David Alaba as the left-sided centre back. Although the need for athleticism in that role has increased in recent years, it does feel as though it's not his preferred position, liable as he is to lose out in aerial duels from floated crosses.
Olmo a feeling
On the other, Leipzig had an almighty scrap with İstanbul Başakşehir on Wednesday night in a seven goal thriller, the outcome of which has set things up intriguingly for their final group game at home to Manchester United where realistically, only a win will suffice. They could be forgiven for having half a collective eye on that pivotal encounter, but the prize of usurping Der FCB at the top of the tree as Christmas looms is a tempting one, too. The 3-4-2-1 shape will seek to make Bayern play wider in attacking areas than they'd like to, and left wing-back Angeliño, already with four to his name in 2020/2021, will need to be marshalled by Benjamin Pavard down that flank extremely well if that strategy is to be nullified. Elsewhere, creative force Dani Olmo will combine his strong defensive contributions with getting as close to Emil Forsberg in order to set up a supply line and shift the opposition's double pivot vertically.
Wings sprouting
There are very few matches, home or away from Munich, where Bayern aren't odds-on favourites. Even in a top of the table match such as this, that remains the case, and the sheer number of chances they can create almost at will is testament to that. However, the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, and RB Leipzig have closed the gap in recent years, despite the wealth of riches 'FC Hollywood' have in their possession. Betfair are offering odds of 2.8 for the energy drink upstarts to draw AND/OR win in the double chance category.
