Familiar fortunes for Sevilla at Camp Nou

In their second home game in five days the Barcelona faithful are spoilt once again with the prospect of a Sevilla side who they have put to the sword a staggering amount of times in recent years. A relieving win it was on Wednesday as a brace from Luis Suarez cancelled Lautaro Martinez’s third minute opener for Internazionale. Both sides will be looking to build on back to back wins in all competitions having endured a relatively slow start to the season given their usual impeccably high standards.

Recent statistics

Ernesto Valverde’s men have won 10 straight league games at Camp Nou, managing to race into a 2-0 lead inside 15 minutes on the last two occasions. Though two places behind the hosts in sixth Sevilla are tied on points with the reigning champions on 13, merely separated by the Catalan giants’ superior goal difference. Julen Lopetegui will hope he can buck the recent trend whereby Sevilla have left Camp Nou empty-handed on all of the last seven La Liga outings, giving little optimism to the travelling contingent. Lucas Ocampos has been impressive of late having signed in the summer from Marseille notching in his last two, improving their form in both La Liga and the Europa League as a result.

Antoine Griezmann

The marquee signing has got out of the blocks very fast in the famous blue and red of Barca, with three goals and two assists in the league already. Also literally in opening the scoring after just six minutes in their last league home game against Villarreal, the Frenchman has come with a huge reputation under a lot of pressure to deliver following an outstanding spell with Atletico Madridwhere he amassed 133 goals and 50 assists from 257 appearances under Diego Simeone.

A World Cup winner and open era La Liga great must get his feet under the table quickly with the likely incoming of Neymar Jr in January, so his early season form could go a long way to securing his first team future under Valverde.

Squad depth

With most of the players of both teams getting ready to play for their respective national sides after three games in a week, some may be rotated and the bulkiest squad in this encounter is certainly that of the hosts. The likes of Carles Perez or Ousmane Dembele could step into the front three and cause different kinds of problems than the Sevilla backline would have prepared for, it remains to be seen if an ageing Luis Suarez can consistently perform with his packed schedule in all competitions.

Barcelona should continue their impressive run and home dominance against Sevilla and build momentum going into the international break.
