Juve to be tested against best attack in Serie A
Atalanta play host to Serie Achampions Juventus in bidding for what would be their first victory in five outings. Both sides may have one eye on matchday five of the Champions League around the corner next week with particularly the Black and Bluesin need of a result, having only registered one solitary point in Group C thus far. Each team has a host of international stars to welcome back to their domestic efforts and the fitness of those individuals could play a key role in who is to go on and win what will be a close-fought affair at Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia.
Recent form
Gian Piero Gasperini’s men have the best attack in the league so far, finding the back of the net 30 times in 12 matches. However, their form has dropped off alarmingly only picking up two wins from their last nine fixtures in all competitions. The Old Lady on the other hand could not be in much better shape for this showdown having won 13 and drawn three in 2019/20 so far with 11 of those victories coming by a single goal margin, demonstrating that they have not been blowing teams away under Maurizio Sarri.
Champions League fortunes
5thplaced Atalanta are rooted to the bottom of Group C with a must win clash against Dinamo Zagreb to come on Tuesday. Juve will accommodate Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid on the same day, but crucially have already sealed qualification into the knockout stages.
Despite their current position it is not over, if Gasperini can mastermind victories over Zagreb and then Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine then they would be favourites to progress. These are two huge games back to back for the hosts.
Key man
If Atalantaare to spring a surprise on Saturday evening their main man will be Sloveniainternational Josep Ilicic, fresh from scoring in his last match in a Euro 2020 qualifier against Poland. Perhaps a late bloomer now at 31 the attacking midfielder has impressed this campaign with four goals and two assists from 10 appearances in Serie A. He has scored 32 goals in 91 games since joining from Fiorentina in July 2017 and is the hosts’ in form player coming into this encounter.
Juventus will stand firm despite a busy international period and limit Atalanta’s diminished attacking forces in the absence of Duvan Zapata.
