Atalanta and Inter battle it out for second place
Atalanta host Inter on the final day of the Serie A season in a outright battle for second place. Who will claim the runners-up spot? Have a read of our preview here:
Pride amongst tragedy
This has been a season to remember for Atalanta. They have been a pleasure to watch in a campaign that saw the town of Bergamo marred in sadness after many thousands died in the COVID-19 pandemic.
The football may offer some solace in what has been a remarkable year for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side.
They have scored more goals than almost every side in Europe’s top five leagues, including the likes of Liverpool and Barcelona with only Bayern Munich and Man City netting more than La Dea at the time of writing.
Another season in the Champions League should help them keep their stars together though most should want to remain as a title challenge could be on the cards next season if they can hit the ground running and avoid a November slip up like they experienced this year.
You feel there is a very narrow window for this group of players and it could already be closing. 2020/21 may be the final time they have enough to push for a Scudetto and most neutrals will be backing them all the way.
Finally some progress at Inter
Inter Milan had become something of a joke in Italy over recent years. Off the field dramas and embarrassing situations as seen with the whole Mauro Icardi affair had made it seem very unlikely they’d mount a title challenge this season.
However, a great bit of business in the transfer market and the appointment of Antonio Conte saw the first really positive campaign in some time.
Players like Romelu Lukaku, Christian Eriksson and, say it quietly, Alexis Sanchez all arrived to great effect and helped the team challenge Juve for the Scudetto, albeit, without really pushing them too hard.
They can now look to build over the summer and, like their opponents on the final day, aim to go all the way next season and break the Juventus monopoly on the Italian domestic game.
