And it is back, the relentless English Football League returns this week in the form of the League Cup. Bournemouth take on Milton Keynes Dons on Saturday afternoon before newly relegated to League One Sheffield Wednesday welcome Huddersfield Town. The Owls went down on the final day of last season after failing to beat Derby County, it must be said that they stayed up if it was not for a six point deduction while Huddersfield slumped to 20th. The hosts are amongst the favourites to win promotion back to the Championship with the Terriers fancied as relegation fodder from it. It is a good match to prepare properly for the first round of league matches, neither side boast a realistic chance of making a deep run in the competition.

Darren Moore, who entered the dugout at Hillsborough towards the end of last season, was in hospital with coronavirus for a spell in the final stretch of matches. The former West Bromwich Albion and Doncaster Rovers manager comes in with a good reputation, hoping to pull off the first promotion of his career with the Owls. Carlos Corberan endured a difficult season in his first with Huddersfield Town in 2020/21 looking to adjust the Terriers’ style of play to a more attacking aesthetically pleasing one. He achieved that to indifferent measures of success, with the club still feeling relegation anxieties until the very end of the campaign.
Josh Koroma is back amongst the squad after a promising spell at the beginning of last season was halted by injury, the 22-year-old is one of the danger men for Moore to look out for should he feature on Sunday. Jordan Rhodes is also back at the John Smith’s Stadium for a second spell following four years with Wednesday. Full backs Harry Toffolo and Pipa also offer a lot going for the Terriers and will be looking to make the most of League One opposition.
Sunday will be a good test for the Owls as they look to bounce straight to the second tier, Huddersfield are a bottom half Championship club and therefore not a great deal of a step up from the level that Wednesday’s promotion rivals and expected to perform at this season. Big spenders Ipswich Town and Wigan Athletic are showing a lot of ambition in the transfer market ahead of the League One campaign, with plenty of experienced Football League players in Wednesday’s side the continuity in the squad should enable them to begin the season in strong fashion building positive relationships on the pitch.
Without knowing them personally, I think Moore will take this encounter more seriously than Corberan, though it is a tough one to call. As the League Cup is notoriously difficult for punters I am looking to get more than one result onside with this selection.
