Real Madrid to be halted in the Basque country?
Real Madrid travel to Real Sociedad in order to maintain their position at the summit of La Liga. Carlo Ancelotti’s men are running a little hot but have commanded a lot of respect at the top of the tree as they attempt to regain the league title that they last won in 2019/20. The hosts have started the season very well as they always seem to do, and will be aiming to produce a more sustained push to finish in the top four than they have in recent years. The White and Blues have shown a lot of promise in recent years but ultimately have not had the staying power to kick on and book a spot in the Champions League. Real Madrid come in as odds against favourites in what is set to be a fairly evenly matched encounter.
Process
The Galacticos are absolutely flying at the top of the pitch. The visitors have scored 35 from 30.6 expected goals (xG) so far this term and have comfortably the best attacking process in the division. However, defensively there is a lot to iron out, it is not a surprise to see Real suffering from the departures of Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos but it must be noted that a lack of solidity in their rearguard could catch up with them at some point in the campaign. Real Madrid rank tenth for defensive process and have overperformed to concede only 15 from 20.9 xGA.
Imanol Alguacil has done a sensational job at Real Sociedad and will be hoping to produce one of the more memorable Saturday night’s in his time in charge by taking three points off of the league leaders. The White and Blues rank sixth by expected points but third in the table and have been far more convincing defensively. They have scored just 19 goals from 15 outings, creating chances at an average of 1.35 xGF per game, compared to a hugely impressive rearguard that has overperformed to let in just 11 from 15 games at 1.07 xGA per game.
