Romania to get the job done
Romania trail North Macedonia by a single point in Group J in looking to pip them to the play-off spot. Romania have the simpler task of travelling to Liechtenstein where North Macedonia go to Iceland and therefore will fancy their chances of progressing. Liechtenstein struggle to compete against anyone outside of the minnows therefore it should not be too difficult to sweep them aside. Romania have not qualified for a major tournament a while ago and are risking a missed generation in playing at one, it is a huge encounter for the nation.
Ones to watch
Ianis Hagi is arguably the most talented player in the Romania squad and will be looking to put in a performance to put Steven Gerrard’s Rangers exit to the back of his mind. The 23-year-old has scored 14 goals and chipped in with 20 assists in 74 outings for Rangers including some highlight reel stuff in the Europa League.
Son of former great Gheorghe, the pressure will be on the younger Hagi to dig Romania out of trouble and keep their World Cup dream alive.
George Puscas is under pressure to perform as he has not kicked on as expected now at the age of 25. The striker joined Reading with a big reputation from Inter Milan but has turned out to be one of the poorer Championship frontmen in recent years. With youngster Jahmari Clarke showing him how it is done against Birmingham City in the Royals’ last match, Puscas will be desperate to put in some impressive displays in the international break to rebuild his confidence.
International football will be a welcome distraction for him with problems on and off the field at the Select Car Leasing Stadium at the moment.
