Evenly matched affair at the Pirelli
Charlton Athletic travel to the Pirelli Stadium to face their former striker Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink’s Burton Albion on Saturday hoping to make it five games unbeaten in all competitions. Caretaker manager Johnnie Jackson has made no secret that he would like the job on a full time basis and he is going the right way about, completely turning the teams form around to have supporters looking at the gap between themselves and the play-off places rather than planning for away days in League Two next season. The Addicks are narrow favourites coming into the matchup with a Burton side who have had one of the best 2021’s in the whole Football League.
Background
In versatile stalwart Lucas Akins the Brewers have a reliable attacking threat that hurt Charlton when Albion did the double over them last season. Joe Powell and Jonny Smith are tricky players from wide areas and Daniel Jebbison, on loan from Sheffield United, is a real wildcard commodity earning his first consistent run of games in senior football.
The midfield trio of George Dobson, Alex Gilbey and Elliot Lee have been simply outstanding since Nigel Adkins was relieved of his duties and will be looking to win the midfield battle on Saturday. Charlton will still be looking over their shoulders just one point above the relegation zone and with high flying Plymouth Argyle up next they will want to take something back to South London.
The players are clearly buying into Jackson’s ideas and have switched to a 3-1-4-2 formation in recent weeks, key man Jonathan Leko picked an injury two weeks ago against Doncaster Rovers so precocious wideman Diallang Jaiyesimi will take his place at wing back.
Goals?
My angle for this encounter, both sides have reliable and organised defensive contingents. It is an evenly matched affair.
- Burton have scored in nine of ten.
- Burton have conceded in eight of ten.
- Burton have seen both teams score in seven of ten.
- Burton have seen over 2.5 goals in seven of ten.
- Charlton have scored in nine of ten.
- Charlton have conceded in seven of ten.
- Charlton have seen both teams score in six of ten.
- Charlton have seen over 2.5 goals in seven of ten.
Charlton look to be the fancied team here but we have to show Burton respect so an unders punt looks the most appealing.
